On Saturday, October 17, I traveled from Beijing to Baoding in style. One of my Shifu’s friends, Liu Xiansheng (Mr. Liu), had a driver pick me up in a BMW and we flew down the expressway.

When we got to the city gate, we were met by Cao Rong, a professor at the Hebei College of Finance, who I had taught English to in Tallahassee while she was there as a visiting scholar. Her husband is a track coach and her son, who is very tall (as you will see) is learning from his father and specializing in the high jump.
Liu Xiansheng invited us to have lunch, which was really superb…I really wish there was a way I could repay everyone’s kindness…

That day, Rong took me to the Old Capitol Building (from the Qing Dynasty (the last one)) and the Lotus Pond, both of which were very nice.

But the highlight of the day, for me, was after dinner when we went to one of the two main parks in Baoding. The coolest thing was people buy these paper lanterns that have a thing that you can light on fire and send off as a little hot air balloon. You make a wish as it floats away…

Make a wish!
I had fun playing with the camera since the shutter speeds were incredibly long, by jiggling the camera a bit while pointing it at one of the flying lanterns, I got some pretty cool effects…

Fun with light!
All in all, it was a very memorable day!
It’s good to know that you had a good visit at my hometown.
I like the experimentation with the exposures.
