Luoyang to Kunming

I’ve been writing the posts since the 18th on the bus from Luoyang to Zhengzhou, so I’m caught up in the writing. I will have to edit the pictures to go with the narrative once I get to Kunming and then post them. This is my fourth post and my MacBook battery is at 74%. I really like the MacBook, but you have to keep feeding it juice, or it’s not a happy camper!

Anyway, I made reservations at a ho(s)tel in Kunming on HostelWorld and got a confirmation from the hotel itself in my email. It cost $6.80, or 10% of the three night stay, to book it via HostelWorld. This is more like it. Rather than paying double that for a place that had bad plumbing fixtures (I had a really hard time coaxing lukewarm water out of the shower), I figure I’ll go back to my hostelling ways. I haven’t stayed at a real hostel (Templeside was the closest, but there really wasn’t a common area where people hung out and shared stories, etc., there) since I got to China.

Getting a bus to Zhengzhou was no problem. It was a 5Y (80 cent) taxi ride from the hotel and I paid 40Y (about $6) for a bus ticket. As I’m on the bus now, I’ll continue this narrative later….Zai Jian…

OK, hello again. I met a very nice lady on the bus who is a lawyer, but doesn’t like her job and I think she wants to move to Canada, where her younger sister lives. I thought she was in her early twenties, but she said that she had been a lawyer for 10 years. All this was in Chinese, so I’m doing pretty well! Anyway, when we got to Zhengzhou, I was going to take a taxi (approximately 70Y) to the airport, but she took one of my bags and walked with me the approximately 10 blocks where she told me there was a bus that goes directly to the airport for 16Y. Along the way, she asked me if I liked lawyers. I told her I thought there were good ones and bad ones, but after her helping me like that, I think she’s a good one!

Anyway, I was half expecting this, but on arrival at the airport (2 1/2 hours early for the flight), every flight was on time with one exception. I don’t need to say anymore, do I? I needed time to catch up on reading, anyway. They have no time for the departure as of now, so I’ll write again when there’s more news…your humble narrator.

Well, the plane was only delayed an hour and it was a smooth flight and the hotel was cozy and clean (the room is all I took pictures of during this journey, if you’re wondering). All’s well that ends well!

The trip from my hotel in Luoyang to the airport in Zhengzhou, a couple of hours away, proves that you can travel very inexpensively if you want to. 5Y for the taxi to the long distance bus, 40Y for the bus, and 16Y for the local bus to the airport in Zhengzhou, for a total of 61Y, or less than $9…
Next up, meeting Alan and Grace in Kunming and a day of tea shopping!
