On the next day, I was “scheduled” to go to the Three Pagodas and take a cable car up on Cangshan, a nearby mountain. I really didn’t feel like doing the touristy sightseeing thing today, though, so I thought I’d take my camera and start walking. I walked north of the old town, starting up the mountains that you see in some of the pictures.

Mountains around Dali
I walked down small alleyways and crude roads, as well as footpaths the locals had worn into the countryside. As it turned out, I found quite a bit of interesting subject matter for photos during the walk. I even got pictures of the Three Pagodas, albeit from a distance. From what I’ve heard, it isn’t really worth the 120Y that they are asking as the entrance price, since you can’t even go up in two of the pagodas…

After the walk, I did some shopping in the Old Town. Even though most of the goods were touristy to a fault, it was still fun to look around at the minority goods for sale.
Finally, before I called it a day, I ate at a restaurant and had the fish soup, like when Alan, Grace and I had eaten in Kunming. This was also very good, however, it only included two condiments (ground hot red pepper and cilantro). I was glad I ate with my friends, since I knew to put some of the soup into the condiments to make a sauce to dip the food in the soup, then drink some of the rest.
I ended up taking pictures after dinner. The cameras and software are amazing these days. A couple of these I took without a flash (and yes, Dennis, no tripod!) and it was almost pitch dark.

Finally, I called it a night. Tomorrow, I would go to Lijiang. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Dali…
I will add one more post with some other pictures. I don’t want to cause these pages to be too big.
Hah, I am surprised you got that shot clear at night, must be the VR!
Well I guess Ken was right……..
